Patrick Henry Scholars/Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship Application

To be eligible for Patrick Henry Scholars/Commonwealth Legacy Scholarship, applicants must:

  • live in the PHCC service region - the City of Martinsville, Henry County, or Patrick County,
  • be 17 years of age or older at the time of applying,
  • applied for admission and received an assigned username and student ID# and have taken the PHCC Virginia Placement Test (VPT),
  • be a 2017 high school graduate or have completed a home school program of study,
  • have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.

Patrick Henry Scholars are merit-based, full-tuition scholarships awarded for superior academic achievement, civic involvement, and leadership potential. If selected as a Patrick Henry Scholar, scholarships are awarded for two academic years provided students:

  • maintain a 3.2 GPA
  • are enrolled in at least 12 credit hours
  • participate in two extracurricular activities per semester approved by the Foundation office
  • volunteer for ten hours per semester
  • attend a mandatory scholars orientation prior to the beginning of fall semester
  • participate in scheduled activities throughout the year
The scholarship covers up to 15 credit hours per semester and may be renewed if students remain eligible and funds are available.

Commonwealth Legacy Scholarships are awarded for one academic year to students attending Patrick Henry Community College (PHCC) for the first time who have demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to developing leadership skills. Eligible applicants must be enrolled full-time seeking an associate degree.

INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLY

1. To complete the online application, you need the following information:

  • High school GPA
  • Home school grades (if applicable)
  • Contact information for yourself and your parent(s) or guardian(s)

2. Once online application is complete, submit the following ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS to the Patrick Henry Community College Foundation office:
  • reference letter from a teacher on official school letterhead,
  • three reference letters from community leaders, guidance personnel, employers, instructors, coaches, etc. on official letterhead,
  • official transcripts from any high school(s) and college(s) attended, and
  • printed and signed affidavit which is available at the end of the online scholarship application process.

Home School Applicants

Additional required documents for graduates of home school programs:

  • Copies of curriculum and grades earned to evaluate the high school body and rigor of work. (Report cards, transcripts from a community college/college, college distance learning program, or a home education correspondence school are accepted.)
  • Evidence of the most recent two years of annual testing by a certified independent proctor using Department of Education nationally normed assessments
  • Four letters of recommendation from a non-relative on official letterhead
